A healthy twist on everyone’s favorite, grilled cheese. I as most everyone else in 2020 gave making bread a try, and after a while I got very good at it. So good in fact I had a lot of bread and needed to come up with some new recipes fast. The “perfect healthier grilled cheese” evolved one day when my youngest choose grilled cheese for lunch. I remembered having a really great grown up grilled cheese a while back that included apples, arugula and honey. I stared off into space while I relived eating out with the company of friends and decided I was going to recreate that joy right here in this kitchen. As I sliced through the bread I knew this was my chance to make big girl grilled cheeses for our ladies lunch. I wanted to make sure that this grilled cheese included a healthy surprise with the tart Granny Smith Apple.
Though I have included my quick recipe for quick dutch oven homemade bread , don’t think a loaf picked up at the grocery store won’t work just as well.

Ingredients
- Homemade bread
- Butter
- Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- Granny Smith Apples
- Honey
Directions
- Slice the loaf of bread into 3/4 inch pieces.
- Choose 2 pieces that and spread butter on both sides of the bread.
- Slice the Granny Smith Apple into thin slices and use the remainder as a garnish if you like.
- Heat up your grill pan. I used my cast iron deep ridge skillet to achieve these beautiful grill marks.
- Assemble your sandwich using one slice of bread and layering, a slice of cheddar cheese, a teaspoon of honey, slice of apple and another slice of cheese (this will help the apple to be melted into your sandwich). Top this off with the other slice of bread.
- Place the sandwich in the grill pan with the heat on medium. The bread is quite thick so this sandwich will take longer than your typical grilled cheese. Cook for 3 minutes on one side and then flip.
- Once both sides are toasted and you can see the cheese melting, it is time to place the sandwich on your plate.
